Storylines

Ruby arrived in Walford, having run away from boarding school to look for her dad, Johnny Allen. On her arrival, she was befriended by Stacey Slater, who grilled Ruby about her family. After storming out of the café where they were talking, she was mugged by a vagrant in Bridge Street, who grabbed hold of Ruby's coat and stole her mobile phone. She was then almost run over by Tina Stewart's taxi.

Ruby and Johnny had major problems in their relationship. Ruby felt that Johnny was pushing her away and reminded him that he only saved her by accident when their house caught fire. He was actually trying to save her sister, Scarlet. Scarlet and their mother, Stephanie, died in the fire in March 2004.

Ruby was livid when Johnny revealed his mistress Tina (the woman who had almost run her over), but accepted the relationship in the end.

Ruby overheard Peggy Mitchell telling people that Johnny is a violent, murdering bully. Ruby confronted him and he denied it. She knew he was lying and stayed with Stacey initially and then Peggy at Pat Evans's house.

Ruby also caught Johnny having an affair with Amy while he was engaged to Tina. She told Tina and Tina left. Ruby eventually forgave her father and moved back in with him but later moved in with boyfriend, Juley Smith, to whom she lost her virginity. Johnny didn't take kindly to this, as he had already warned Juley about Ruby. Ruby defended Juley and even turned against her dad for him, but she was devastated to learn that Phil Mitchell was paying Juley to sleep with her as part of his feud with Johnny. She reacted by getting drunk and collapsing on the floor. Phil, who had broken into Johnny's house to have it out with him, took her to hospital. Juley attempted to get Ruby back, and she eventually agreed to try again. However, she realised that she couldn't trust him when she found herself questioning his phone calls.

Johnny was beaten up on New Year's Eve by Dennis Rickman after he grabbed Dennis's pregnant wife, Sharon, by the throat and threatened her. Johnny arranged for Dennis to be stabbed and fell unconscious after Dennis attacked him but regained consciousness in hospital. Dennis was stabbed to death soon afterwards, leaving Sharon with an unborn child and no husband.

Johnny decided to take Ruby on holiday. He stopped her saying goodbye to Stacey by stealing her mobile phone and then dropping it in the road for their taxi to run over and destroy. When Ruby and Johnny returned from their holiday, Johnny bought a house in Essex without telling anyone. He sold the club, and they moved to Essex to escape it all. Ruby briefly returned to collect her things.

Ruby discovered that Johnny was an alcoholic in "Get Johnny Week" and she left him to Phil. She and Grant had a heart to heart, and Grant discovered that Phil paid Juley to sleep with Ruby. Grant was furious and burst into Johnny's office where Phil was holding Johnny until he confessed to Dennis's murder. This gave Johnny a chance to get away. There was a big chase, which resulted in Danny Moon handcuffing the brothers and marching them into the forest. He was about to kill Grant when Jake Moon shot him instead. Danny died instantly. Ruby persuaded Johnny to hand himself in, and then returned with Jake to Walford. She was furious with him when he revealed he had killed Danny. Jake became obsessed with Ruby's welfare, but took over the running over her club until she turned 18 in October 2006.

In Spring 2006, Ruby developed an unreciprocated crush on the far older Grant Mitchell to no avail, and more recently was assisting Charlie Slater in the running of his allotment and feud with Bert Atkinson.

On 24 July 2006, Ruby withdrew £2000 to surprise Stacey with a girlie holiday as Stacey couldn't afford it. However, Stacey's boyfriend, Bradley Branning wanted to come too, annoying Ruby so she rowed with Stacey. On returning the money to the club, she was caught off guard by an intruder, who knocked her unconscious and stole the money. When Stacey suggested Juley could be behind the attack, Ruby ridiculed the idea, believing he would never do that. However, she was proved wrong when Jake caught Juley's brother, Gus, trying to return the cash.

Ruby and Stacey's friendship became rocky when Stacey started dating Bradley Branning and spending less time with Ruby. They grew apart and argued frequently until Stacey revealed that she was pregnant. Ruby was so excited at the thought of being an auntie that she bought a teddy bear for the baby, unaware that Stacey had aborted it. Stacey told her the baby was gone and Ruby assumed that she had had a miscarriage.

Ruby then had a relationship with Sean Slater, Stacey's brother. The relationship caused tension between Jake and the couple as their relationship was affecting the business, and Jake was sceptical as he said he knew Sean's type and that Sean would hurt Ruby.

On Ruby's 18th birthday, 20 October 2006, Ruby found out that her father had had a heart attack after an argument with Sean in prison. She was about to go to the hospital when she argued with Jake, leading him to reveal that he never liked her but pitied her. He went into the office and she was furious, but as she was about to leave, two women, Nina Brown and Kate Chole, told her that her father had died. Jake emerged from the office and sarcastically wished Ruby a happy birthday, unaware Johnny had died, as he left.

On the day of Johnny's funeral, Ruby went missing and Sean found her, slumped behind the desk in the Scarlet office, with a bottle of vodka. Later, she spoke to Pat who made her think, by saying that her father was normally right about people, including Jake and Sean.

Sean later took a bag full of clothes to Scarlet, knowing Ruby would look through them. She found a ring but Sean grabbed the bag and walked out. She questioned him and he revealed he was leaving. However, he just wanted to make her feel bad and told her that he had a ring for her on her birthday but he thought people would think he was proposing to her just because her father's death, meant she was coming into money. However, they visited Johnny's solicitor, who revealed Ruby will get enough money to live on, and get the rest when she is 21. She saw no reason why she and Sean couldn't marry and they revealed their engagement on 27 October.

When she was in Venice, her fiancé slept with Preeti Choraria and passionately kissed Tanya Branning. Stacey told Ruby that Sean had been unfaithful but she forgave him, asking him to move with her to her home in Essex. Sean initially agreed but threw her Dad's ashes in her face when he found out that she had told his Mum, Jean that he was back. After shouting in the street that nobody could touch her because of who her family was, she then left Walford in the back of a cab, having fallen out with Stacey for good.

On 1 July 2008, Max Branning phoned Ruby with an offer for the house they had been renting from her since they moved to the square. Ruby accepted it until Jack made her a better offer, which she accepted.

Impact

The Office for National Statistics have attributed the rise in babies called Ruby in 2006 to the character.[2]
